I am Lamin Ceesay, a 27 year old of Gambian national, who has been living in Asia for 8 months now. After having landed in mainland China, I proceeded to Hong Kong after two months and then to Thailand. Presently I am temporarily settled in Zhuhai after having finished my TEFL program last month. A fresh graduate, with some teaching experience back home in Africa, I now travel far and wide to pursue an intensive career in English teaching. I believe Africa has a lot to give back to the people of Asia, considering the strong bilateral relations that exists between the two. Our mother-tongue in Gambia is not English, as you may know, but besides it being the country's official language, it is as well the medium of instruction in all schools, from kindergarten to university. Thus we do have a strong proficiency in the language to a native speaker's level, if not even better.
Through my healthy curiosity, I came to China, with hope, believe and quest for a new career that is worthwhile. I then enrolled into some professional training in TEFL. I graduated recently from TEFL International, Zhuhai centre, China. I am now tirelessly hunting for jobs.
Besides just wanting to leave the poverty and humiliation of my life in Gambia, after I have had my first English language teaching experience in Senegal, West Africa, I started to earn more respect for teachers not only for the pain in teaching, but also it being a noble profession. Through teaching, I will get my heart fulfilled and body fed, and then finally become a presence in the world as the legacy of my good fortune will continue to live on even after my death. It is my strong conviction that Africa has a lot to give back to Asia; one way to do this is to offer employment to its natives, who will share their thoughts and experiences through an effective medium like teaching. In so doing, the cultural differences will be done away with, thus an immersion into each others’ cultures, creating a conducive atmosphere for a peaceful and united people with a common goal.
Though my teaching experience is less than a year, but I still do believe I have been equipped with the necessary techniques needed to effectively prepare and deliver English language lessons in my own unique way with fun, style and eloquence.
