Dear Parents:

My work formally educating children began in my own household. When my oldest son grew old enough to attend school, I made the decision to forgo a public-school setting and instead opted to homeschool him, and eventually, his brother. As a homeschooling parent, I had to become familiar with New York State’s learning requirements. Traveling down this path also allowed me to become familiar with a variety of curriculum options and also provided me with the freedom to explore and implement several hands-on and experiential learning experiences.

As part of the homeschooling experience, I created and taught a nature studies course to children through various co-op groups. This class taught students how to identify various birds and bugs in the outdoor world and encouraged them to record their outdoor observations in a nature journal. I also implemented the Mighty Milers/New York Rising Road Runners physical education program. This program was designed to get kids moving through a variety of running related activities where they could track their mileage and earn incentives at various benchmarks. I also taught a math class inspired by Bedtime Math’s Crazy 8’s math club. This class used a variety of manipulatives to introduce children to math concepts through fun and imaginative play creating shapes with glow sticks, sending stuffed animals down self-constructed zip lines at various angles, and using blocks of toilet paper to measure hallways by non-standard measurement. I also assisted in other classrooms, providing help to other parents and teachers.

I have continued my work in the educational field by working as the district registrar for a local school district. In this position, I used my communication skills to interact with the parents of incoming students to not only ensure all required paperwork was complete, but also to address any inquiries or concerns they had about the district. Most recently, I moved to a position as a teacher aide. In this position, I work with many learning levels, assisting students with questions, concerns, and struggles they might experience in a variety of subjects.

I am looking for a creative and challenging position and am excited about the possibility of returning to a homeschooling environment. I thank you for the opportunity and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Melissa Betrus
