My teaching philosophy centers on active engagement of students’ critical thinking skills, mastery of core content, and their social development. I know that all children can learn if given the appropriate environment, support, and an effective role-model. A well structure environment is also a key factor in the success of children in the classroom. Routines and daily procedures as well as smooth transitions from one activity to the next help students to be focused and organized. Finally, students need to develop their 21st Century skills. I employ multiple opportunities for students to interact with technology in a blended classroom. Student’s active use of technology and project based learning opportunities develops their long-term abilities to use resources to solve problems and think critically.
In addition to creating an environment where students can be successful, I feel that it is my responsibility to develop their socialization skills. With guidance and role-modeling, I encourage students to work out their problems with classmates first, before I step in to mediate. Also, I group students on a rotating basis so they are challenged to work others just as they will in the future. In addition, I assign leadership roles on a rotating basis to push students and demonstrate that each of us is a leader in our own way. Finally, I teach students how to give constructive feedback and to allow different opinions and views to be expressed in the classroom so that students learn from each other and not be judged.
