I have been teaching Spanish since 1994. I've taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced college classes, including graduate courses in Spanish linguistics. The last 10 years or so I've been teaching high school Spanish, some ESL (English as a second language), and now most recently Spanish for Heritage speakers (students who grew up speaking Spanish at home, but with little or no formal education in Spanish). In total, I've taught over 25 years.
I have moved over the years toward a strategy of learning through comprehension and communication, and innovative language learning tools and ideas (and here's my interest in further developing my programming skills). I still find a place for traditional strategies (old school stuff like flashcards, translation, transcriptions, grammar drills, etc.), but with an understanding that these simply do not have the power by themselves to move you toward fluency and productive conversation and interaction.
I am not just a guy who speaks some Spanish. I have a PhD in Spanish linguistics. I teach Spanish as my day job. And I have studied enough French, Portuguese, and Hebrew to converse and meet basic needs. I study languages as a hobby and have started working on a language learning website.
I would love to find a tutor who is both able to help me with Javascript (and web development in general) and has a personal interest in language learning.
